Our COE 104 glass rod is sold by the ounce. The Website price per rod is approximate. After your order has been pulled and weighed, the exact cost will be applied to your purchase. We will never bill your credit card for more than the amount on your order form. If you pay by check or money order, it is likely that we will add a few rods to your order, ensuring that you receive the proper amount of glass based on the actual ounce price. Although the rods vary in diameter and in length, they usually weigh less than an ounce. In fact we find that it takes about 20 rods to weigh one pound. See the next section of this page for our discount policy.
Frequent Buyers Club
We now have the Database capability to take even better care of our customers, so we are officially
implementing the Frequent Buyers Club! When you qualify for one of our Volume Glass Rod Discounts
(by purchasing 1, 3, 5, or 10 pounds of rods), you will Automatically join the "Frequent Buyers Club"! For example, if you
purchase three pounds of glass rod one month, and qualify for the 30% discount, you will receive
at least 30% off your glass rod purchases for a year (even if your subsequent glass orders are smaller!)
If you make a larger purchase, such as Ten Pounds, you will be bumped up to the 40% discount on every
glass rod purchase for the next year! This is our "Thank You" program to our wonderful customers! Note: Prepackaged Glass Packs (which are already discounted), Stringer and Stringer Packs, Reticello and Dichroic Glass
are not eligible for Frequent Buyer Discounting and do not benefit your FBD rod weight totals. |
After reading the information below you may estimate your volume discount and, if paying by check or money order, modify your payment amount accordingly. (The discount will not be shown in the order form, but we will modify the order according to your payment. If your payment is made with a credit card, your order will be based on the quantity of rods you select and your charge will be modified according to overall weight. )
Your discount will be based on the actual weight of the rods you order. Our Volume discounts on glass are as follows:
| 1 pound: | take 25% off |
| 3 pounds: | take 30% off |
| 5 pounds: | take 35% off |
| 10 pounds: | take 40% off |
We have recently LOWERED our "A" priced glass rod 20% and kept the frequent Buyers Discount Program intact. You will continue to receive additional discounts on our new, lower A-price structure! We have been able to purchase our glass rod for less, so we are passing the savings on to you!
To make your glass cost easier to estimate, you may use the following table. The true cost of your glass order is likely to be a bit less. Again, if you pay by check or money order, you may receive a bit more glass rod than you ordered, based on actual weight.
| Discount Rate: | One pound | Three Pound | Five Pound | Ten Pound | |

All glass categories are mixable for quantity breaks

In order to determine if two types of glass are compatible, we need to understand how glass behaves. All glass expands when you heat it and shrinks or contracts when it is cooled. The rate at which it expands can be measured and assigned a number, commonly referred to as the COE, or coefficient of expansion. The COE is a unit of length per degree of temperature, and is actually a very small number (lots of zeros behind a decimal point). We normally see the COE as a whole number for ease of understanding. Effetre's COE is 104 (although it can vary from 104 to 108), Bullseye has a COE of 90. Spectrum has a tested-compatible line of glass with a COE of 96. Window glass is approximately 86, and Borosilicate or Pyrex has a COE of approximately 32.
When melting any types of glass together, it's best to have the COE no more than one or two digits apart. There is some leeway with beads because they are so small. Because Bullseye and Effetre have COEs which are 14 digits apart, it is unwise to mix even one type of stringer on top of another type of glass. See Pages 108-109 of Making Glass Beads, by Cindy Jenkins for a clearer explanation of COE and glass compatibility.
